FOMAA Dance - Overcoming Adversity

FOMAA Dance - Overcoming Adversity

06/10/2018

Out of all the dances I have done, this might be the hardest dance I have done, but also the one i had the most fun on. FOMAA (federation of American Malayalee association) is a South Indian cultural organization that operates all over the U.S. They organize many different programs to bring South Indians from many parts of the U.S together to celebrate our large cultural history. This year, they had planned to organize their inauguration program in Atlanta. The organizer for the program was a family friend of ours, and he invited me to do a dance. At first, I wasn't really willing to do the dance because there was only 2 weeks left for the program and it would be really hard to form a dance group and practice the dance in that limited time. If I was going to do a dance, it was going to be a perfect dance with no mistakes. But when he constantly kept asking, I decided to go forward with the dance. We first formed the team that included some of the people from the organization and some of my friends. We decided that we would make it a mixed dance with boys and girls. When we started the practice, we faced many different obstacles because of the limited time. Because there was only a small amount of time, we had to keep practices during weekdays, and many of the members were busy during the days. So, it was hard to find a perfect timing that worked for everyone. And in between the practice, one of our members got sick and couldn’t attend some of the practice. There was constant tension between the people because we all thought that this dance was going to fail, and no one really had any hope.  But we were able overcome all the adversity and perform the dance on June 10, 2018. In my opinion, the dance was not perfect, but we performed really well considering the fact that we only practiced for 2 weeks. I always reflect back to this dance program because we were able to beat all the odds in performing the dance. Even I did not think that we would be able to perform this well. And not whenever I am facing any problems, I look back into this dance a say to myself that if I was able to overcome all the obstacles to perform this dance, then I can overcome my current problems too.
